Macaronesia |

A few people know this name
which designs the group of archipelagos of the Atlantic Ocean composed by the
islands of the Azores, the Canary Islands, the islands of Cape Verde and
Madeira Island. As the climate is variable, but nonetheless, of
Mediterranean-type (reduced rainfall in summer), I had to make a choice of
species requiring almost no watering during summer. I've added to this area, xerophytic
plants from the Moroccan coast and South of Spain and, of course, I kept some
growing naturally here. Among all these plants are some short-lived as
viper’s bugloss (Echium sp), chrysanthemum
(Argyranthemum frutescens) etc., and
thus this area evolves more than others over the years. Nevertheless, this area
is organised around typical plants from the Macaronesian flora. To name some:
the dragon tree (Dracaena draco),
Aeonium, Pinus canariensis, the canary sage (Salvia canariensis) which naturalizes freely , as do Pterocephalus and Retama
monosperma from South of Spain. |
